How does sandalwood oil affect health?
Sandalwood oil is a natural essential oil obtained from sandalwood, particularly species such as Santalum album (white sandalwood) or other plants belonging to the Sandalaceae family. This oil has a long history of use in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and traditional medicine. Its distinctive scent was once experienced when smelling a sandalwood rosary. It was the only form available in Poland. Where does sandalwood oil come from? Sandalwood is native primarily to South Asia, including India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The oil is extracted through steam distillation of finely ground sandalwood, yielding a thick, golden-yellow liquid with a distinctive, warm, and woody scent. The highest quality oil comes from white sandalwood (Santalum album), which must be at least 15-20 years old for its wood to contain sufficient aromatic oils. What does sandalwood look like? Sandalwood, particularly the species Santalum album (white sandalwood), is a medium-sized, evergreen tree with a distinctive appearance. It grows to a height of 4–10 meters. Trees grown in plantations are usually shorter to facilitate harvesting. The trunk is straight, and its bark is thin and smooth, light brown when young, darkening with age. The interior of the wood (known as the pith) has an intense aroma and a golden-yellow color, making it its most valuable part. Sandalwood is a semi-parasitic plant , its roots attaching to the roots of other plants to extract water and nutrients. It prefers dry, sandy soils but is adaptable to various conditions. Sandalwood is highly valued for its wood and essential oil. Unfortunately, due to overexploitation, many sandalwood species, including Santalum album, are protected. Controlled cultivation and plantations are currently the primary source of sandalwood oil to protect wild trees.
