Pumpkin enzymes are natural enzymes obtained from pumpkin flesh (most often Cucurbita pepo). They are gaining popularity in cosmetics, including hair care, due to their gentle yet effective exfoliating and regenerating effects. Pumpkin enzymes are primarily proteolytic enzymes—those that break down proteins. In the case of pumpkin, the dominant enzyme is protease. Their action has been compared to that of papaya (papain) and pineapple (bromelain), but they are gentler and more gentle on sensitive scalps. They act as an enzymatic exfoliant, removing dead skin cells, excess sebum, and impurities without mechanical friction. They help cleanse the pores of the scalp, improving its condition and may promote hair growth. Well-cleaned hair follicles are less susceptible to inflammation and dandruff. Pumpkin enzymes help regulate the microbiome and may alleviate symptoms of dandruff or oily skin.
