Schisandra chinensis, also known as Schisandra chinensis, is an adaptogenic plant, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress and maintain internal balance. This plant has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine for its comprehensive health benefits. Schisandra chinensis contains various bioactive compounds, including: lignans (schizandrins), which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; a wealth of vitamins (A, C, E) and minerals (zinc, iron, magnesium); organic acids, including citric and malic acids; and phytosterols, which benefit skin health. Studies have shown that schisandra alleviates oxidative stress induced by city dust. These findings have led to the recognition that Schisandra chinensis can protect skin cell function from urban pollution and can be used as a skin protectant. The anti-inflammatory and protective effects of S. chinensis on the skin barrier are associated with the inhibition of cytokines and chemokines such as TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and TSLP.
