In recent years, snail slime has gained immense popularity in the cosmetics industry, becoming one of the most desirable skincare ingredients. Although its presence in formulas may seem exotic, its regenerative and moisturizing properties have been confirmed by both users and numerous scientific studies. Initially known mainly for Asian cosmetic formulas, snail slime quickly gained recognition around the world – also among European consumers looking for effective, yet natural skin care solutions. In natural conditions, it performs a protective and regenerative function, allowing the animal to move over sharp surfaces and heal micro-injuries. In cosmetology, snail secretion is valued for its multidirectional biological effects, resulting from the wealth of bioactive chemical compounds contained in it. Biochemical analyses have shown that snail slime contains a number of ingredients beneficial to the condition of the skin, including allantoin, glycolic acid, collagen, elastin, mucopolysaccharides, proteolytic enzymes and vitamins (A, E and C). Allantoin is known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory and epidermal regeneration properties. Glycolic acid has a keratolytic effect – it gently exfoliates dead skin cells, while stimulating cell renewal and increasing the penetration of active substances into the skin. Collagen and elastin – although they do not penetrate deeply in the form of macromolecules – create a protective film on the skin surface, improving its elasticity and hydration. The regenerative properties of snail slime are particularly important in the context of damaged or sensitive skin. Studies have shown that the use of preparations containing SSF can accelerate the healing processes of micro-injuries, burns and irritations (Lee et al., 2010). The ingredients present in the slime stimulate fibroblasts to synthesize type I collagen, which translates into improved skin structure and its repair capabilities. Another important effect of snail slime is its effect on skin hydration. Mucopolysaccharides contained in the secretion have the ability to bind water molecules, which increases the skin's ability to maintain an appropriate level of hydration. The effect is improved firmness, smoothing and a feeling of comfort for dry and dehydrated skin. In addition, snail slime products are effective in reducing acne scars, stretch marks and fine wrinkles. Glycolic acid supports epidermal reconstruction, while allantoin and proteolytic enzymes help brighten discolorations and reduce the visibility of acne lesions. Regular use of SSF cosmetics has a beneficial effect on the skin's microbiological balance and can alleviate symptoms of inflammation, such as acne vulgaris or eczema.
